Jessica Phillips

Jessica is worshiper and follower of Jesus. He rescued her heart at age 6 but he rescued her calling, purpose and direction in her early 20's. Everyday God is still writing Jessica's story. It involves her husband, Brad, her daughter, Emery, their extended families. But the story is a tale of loss of life and dark grief. And the story ebs and weaves and the grief story is followed by weddings and laughter. And what comes next? A Baby! God sends us a baby to shape and teach and grow right in the midst of our loss and realizing that life actually moves forward. We didn't think it would again after he died. But life just did what it was supposed to do...and it went on. And hope is born again. Everything I write is based on this fact: I'm God's child, I'm alive today. So what do You want me to do for You? Because I want my contribution to matter. I want to leave a legacy.

Book Synopsis:

THERE'S NOTHING AS GOOD AS THE RICH GONE BAD.

When Ruby McTavish Callahan Woodward Miller Kenmore dies, she’s not only North Carolina’s richest woman, she’s also its most notorious. The victim of a famous kidnapping as a child and a widow four times over, Ruby ruled the tiny town of Tavistock from Ashby House, her family’s estate high in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

But in the aftermath of her death, her adopted son, Camden, wants little to do with the house or the money―and even less to do with the surviving McTavishes. Instead, he rejects his inheritance, settling into a normal life as an English teacher in Colorado and marrying Jules, a woman just as eager to escape her own messy past.

Ten years later, his uncle’s death pulls Cam and Jules back into the family fold at Ashby House. Its views are just as stunning as ever, its rooms just as elegant, but the legacy of Ruby is inescapable.

And as Ashby House tightens its grip on Jules and Camden, questions about the infamous heiress come to light. Was there any truth to the persistent rumors following her disappearance as a girl? What really happened to those four husbands, who all died under mysterious circumstances? And why did she adopt Cam in the first place? Soon, Jules and Cam realize that an inheritance can entail far more than what’s written in a will––and that the bonds of family stretch far beyond the grave.

“The Last Letter” by Rebecca Yarros

*Note: As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

YOU, our favorite sisters & listeners, have chosen a love story for our March pick. As we stare spring break in the face (while also battling spring allergies), we hope this story captures your heart and mind. Lauren tells us to have the Kleenex box ready as you get swept up in this winding tale of love and heartbreak.

We can’t wait to meet you on the page!

“The Last Letter is a haunting, heartbreaking and ultimately inspirational love story.“―InTouch Weekly

Book Synopsis:

Beckett,

If you’re reading this, well, you know the last-letter drill. You made it. I didn’t. Get off the guilt train, because I know if there was any chance you could have saved me, you would have.

I need one thing from you: get out of the army and get to Telluride.

My little sister Ella’s raising the twins alone. She’s too independent and won’t accept help easily, but she has lost our grandmother, our parents, and now me. It’s too much for anyone to endure. It’s not fair.

And here’s the kicker: there’s something else you don’t know that’s tearing her family apart. She’s going to need help.

So if I’m gone, that means I can’t be there for Ella. I can’t help them through this. But you can. So I’m begging you, as my best friend, go take care of my sister, my family.

Please don’t make her go through it alone.

Ryan

Book Summary:

Meet Kate, Aubrey, and Jenny.

They first met as college roommates and soon became inseparable, despite their many differences. Kate was beautiful, wild, wealthy, and damaged. Aubrey came from the wrong side of the tracks, and wanted more than anything to distance herself from her past. Jenny was brilliant, ambitious, and determined to win big at all costs. As an unlikely alliance formed, Kate, Aubrey, and Jenny swore they would always be friends.

Twenty years later, the three women - all married, and deemed successful by any measure - are together again. But one of them is standing at the edge of a bridge…and someone is urging her to jump. How did it come to this? Who is to blame? Is it true that it’s always the husband who commits the worst crimes against his wife - or is someone else behind a sinister plot to tear these three women apart?

episode 49

In this week’s episode we are joined by Founder and CEO of the fabulous Lola & Tae Jewelry company, Amanda Moffitt. Amanda’s life took a one-hundred-eighty-degree turn when she left her profession in education to pursue her side-hustle of jewelry making full time.

Amanda joins us in our “Goals ‘n Grace” series as she shares her personal story of laying in bed wrestling with silent prayers of, “God, I have to do something different. I can’t keep going in this job.” And how that desperation for a new direction in her life drove her to transform a hobby into a six-figure business in just four years.

Amanda shares her “why”: the thing that drove her singularly toward a goal she pursues daily; we know her “why” will resonate deeply within your own “why.” Her story will inspire you and encourage you to reach for the thing you know God is calling you into.

Follow Amanda and please shop from her gorgeous jewelry collections at www.lolaandtae.com

episode 47: Goals 'n Grace

This episode is the first in a series we are calling “Goals ‘n Grace.” In this series, we will explore the complexities of goal-setting versus goal-achieving. Along the way, we will interview several of our goal “heroes”: people we know who’ve set goals, taken risks, and accomplished incredible goals while granting themselves grace to fail forward.

Join us for this inaugural episode as we explore the psyche behind goal-setting. We’ll also be transparent about some of our own goal-setting, achieving, and some of the goals we left behind.

Proverbs 21:5

The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty.

Galatians 6:9

Let us not get tired of doing good, for we will reap at the proper time if we don’t give up.

Luke 14:28

Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it?

Nehemiah 6:3

So I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing important work and cannot come down. Why should the work cease while I leave it and go down to you?”

What are you praying for in 2024?

I want to leave a legacy.

episode 38: ThanksLiving

Episode 0038 : ThanksLiving

This episode is all about living a life of thanks. The sisters talk about the impact that gratitude has on the brain vs. the impact that complaining and negativity have on the brain...and body and spirit. They also offer some easy contemplative rhythms for you to practice as you enter the busy holiday rush.

Link to the book Jessica referenced:

“Option B: Facing Adversity, Building Resilience, and Finding Joy”  by Sheryl Sandberg & Adam Grant

Giving Thanks is God’s Will For Our Lives

1 Thessalonians 5:16-22

16 Rejoice always, 17 pray constantly, 18 give thanks in everything; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 19 Don’t stifle the Spirit. 20 Don’t despise prophecies, 21 but test all things. Hold on to what is good. 22 Stay away from every kind of evil.

Psalm 100

A psalm. For giving grateful praise.

Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth.
    Worship the Lord with gladness;
come before him with joyful songs.
Know that the Lord is God.
    It is he who made us, and we are his[a];
we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving
    and his courts with praise;
give thanks to him and praise his name.
For the Lord is good and his love endures forever;
his faithfulness continues through all generations.

Psalm 136

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.
His love endures forever.
Give thanks to the God of gods.
His love endures forever.
Give thanks to the Lord of lords:
His love endures forever.

to him who alone does great wonders,
His love endures forever.
who by his understanding made the heavens,
His love endures forever.
who spread out the earth upon the waters,
His love endures forever.
who made the great lights—
His love endures forever.
the sun to govern the day,
His love endures forever.
the moon and stars to govern the night;
His love endures forever.

23 He remembered us in our low estate
His love endures forever.
24 and freed us from our enemies.
His love endures forever.
25 He gives food to every creature.
His love endures forever.

26 Give thanks to the God of heaven.
His love endures forever.

Ways to Make Thanks A More Contemplative Part of a Season:

30 days of thanks journal entries

30 days of thanks and fasting

30 days : write 4 or 15 or 30 letters to people telling them how grateful you are for them

Be intentional with people.

Episode 35: Book Club Wrap Up of "The Neighbors" by Hannah Mary McKinnon

It’s the last Thursday of the month...do you know what that means?!?! BOOK CLUB!!!

Our favorite sisters, Lauren & Lindi, join us to deep dive our October pick, “The Neighbors” by Hannah Mary McKinnon.

This was an exceptionally complex story with so many complicated characters - our heads are still spinning from the whiplash (especially from that last chapter). This was one of those books that just sticks with you. A slow burn that built into a great explosion.

We want to know what you thought! Send us your thoughts, comments, questions, and feedback on the socials or at our email address. All of that information is listed below!

“This beautiful, illuminating tale of hope and courage is based on interviews that were conducted with Holocaust survivor and Auschwitz-Birkenau tattooist Ludwig (Lale) Sokolov—an unforgettable love story in the midst of atrocity.”

Book Synopsis:

“In April 1942, Lale Sokolov, a Slovakian Jew, is forcibly transported to the concentration camps at Auschwitz-Birkenau. When his captors discover that he speaks several languages, he is put to work as a Tätowierer (the German word for tattooist), tasked with permanently marking his fellow prisoners.

Imprisoned for over two and a half years, Lale witnesses horrific atrocities and barbarism—but also incredible acts of bravery and compassion. Risking his own life, he uses his privileged position to exchange jewels and money from murdered Jews for food to keep his fellow prisoners alive.

One day in July 1942, Lale, prisoner 32407, comforts a trembling young woman waiting in line to have the number 34902 tattooed onto her arm. Her name is Gita, and in that first encounter, Lale vows to somehow survive the camp and marry her.

A vivid, harrowing, and ultimately hopeful re-creation of Lale Sokolov's experiences as the man who tattooed the arms of thousands of prisoners with what would become one of the most potent symbols of the Holocaust, The Tattooist of Auschwitz is also a testament to the endurance of love and humanity under the darkest possible conditions.”

episode 22: Back-To-School Special

We can hardly believe it’s that pivotal time again when summer sings its last hoorah and we shift gears up for a new school year. Between the two of us, we have four daughters: 11th grade, 7th grade, 4th grade, and 3rd grade – so none of this is new to us. In the south we say, “this ain’t our first rodeo.”

In this episode we take you through our back-to-school checklists, including what not to forget to order, lunch and dinner ideas, reminders and ideas for getting your kids back on a normal sleep/wake schedule. We added some things to your checklist from the notes our teen and tween daughters gave us – extra items that need to go into the backpack that you might not have thought of.

We hope these ideas and lists are helpful to you and get you thinking about your own lists and routines.

We’ve linked many of the items we suggested to make your shopping/ordering a tad bit easier.

episode 14: Guide to Summer Vacay

Episode 0014

“Guide to Summer Vacay”

1.     If you can arrive at your destination in 6-7 hours or less...DRIVE! Flights are an absolute nightmare. And, on average, you’ll spend 6-7 hours in the airport – from checking in, going through security, sitting at your gate, delays, delays, delays, finally getting in the air on a connecting flight, grabbing your luggage from the carrier and getting your vehicle whether you are renting or Ubering. If you can drive it in 6-7 hours, just drive – UNLESS you can fly directly to your destination without a connecting flight.

2.     If you fly, prepare your mind, heart, head, and spirit for DELAYS and cancellations and inconveniences.

3.     Do not take it out on the airport staff. They did not mess up your flight. They are dealing with you and everyone else whose flight just got screwed up. Be kind to them. Be patient. Smile.

4.     If you’re flying, here’s what to wear: something light and breathable. Dress in layers. Dress comfortably! I wore black joggers, a tank top, and a light, loose-fitting jacket/cardigan. Wear comfortable shoes! I wore cute, chunky flip-flops. If I got cold, I had fuzzy socks to slip on. The flights were mostly warm-to-hot, especially as we had to sit for a while. Once in the air, they cooled down but if you’re stuck on a tarmac, expect to be WARM. My feet get hot, so I’d rather have on flops b/c it keeps me a little cooler. And if I get cold, I pull out my fuzzy, warm socks and it gives me a little added warmth.

5.     If you’re flying, here’s what to pack in your carry-on: anything you might need if you’re stuck overnight without your luggage.

I want to leave a legacy.

episode 13: Book Club Wrap-Up for "One True Loves"

Oh Sisters (and Brothers)...have we got a fun episode for you this week! On this first day of June, we welcome back our two favorite-sister-bookworms, Lauren & Lindi, from SistersOnTheSamePage.

In this episode, we deep dive our May pick, “One True Loves” by Taylor Jenkins Reid. This was an absolute LOVE from all four of the sisters on the show.

You can guess that the sisters span an emotional rollercoaster as they talk about love, heartbreak, and pivotal moments that split life in two. There’s a lot of laughing and cackling in this episode. There’s also some hand-gesture-sign-language from Lindi, a coughing bout from Lauren, a noisy ice machine, kids giggling in the background, and a buzzing fly. It’s wheels off and it’s so much fun!

The Sisters want YOUR feedback on this book. What did you love? How did you resonate with the main characters: Emma, Jesse, and Sam? Did you like the ending? Who would you have chosen if you were Emma? Tell the sisters what you think! Send the Sisters a message on Instagram, Facebook, or email them at: jennandjuicepodcast@gmail.com

You’ll DEFINITELY want to listen to the end because Lauren & Lindi reveal their June book club pick – and it’s one Jenn & Juice can’t wait to sink their teeth into!
